Reliability Analysis Tool in DIgSILENT PowerFactory
The main consideration of the electrical power companies is to maintain adequate power supply to the customers taking in account minimum spending cost, maximum power quality and higher network flexibility. The growth of the electrical networks and the increase of the industrial activities lead to find out a way to assess the performance of the networks. Hence, power networks reliability assessment rose up to describe the networks performance and durability. Reliability assessment of the electrical networks is an important tool to evaluate the networks performance and to justify any need of upgrading or modification. The reliability assessment state the power interruption frequencies and annual interruption cost by means of several indices such as SAIFI, SAIDI, CAIDI. These indices describe the impact of the interruptions on the customers as well as the financial impact on the power company.

The classical method of obtaining the reliability indices is by using the indices mathematical equations and calculate the results. Generally the network annual interruption data entered in Microsoft Excel sheets to calculate the reliability indices. However, this method takes lots of time from the asset management engineers and may lead some time to errors due to human mistakes. In addition, without using simulation software to simulate the failures and the interruptions, indicating the interruption location and the network failure elements will be difficult. Moreover, monitoring the load flow in the network during the interruptions will be not available. -

The reliability assessment function in DIgSILENT PowerFactory can be accessed by selecting the reliability toolbar from the change toolbox icon as shown in the figure below:

The basic user procedure for completing a reliability assessment consist of the following steps shown in the figure below.Steps on the left are compulsory, while the steps on the right are optional and can be used to increase the detail of the calculation.
